Syria began full scale attacks on its citizens August 1st, the first day of Ramadan, in the city of Hama. Casualties counting upwards of 2000 people and the Syrian government shows no signs of slowing down. Find out more after the break.
People were gathering in Hama to protest their oppressive government as part of the Arab Spring. It has been a tough time for the citizens of Syria; for 5 months they have been protesting with very little success. The government, headed by president Al-Assad, made feeble attempts to appease the public in the beginning, but as call for his removal has gained traction, reaching hundreds of thousands of protesters, Al-Assad has become more violent and retaliatory.
President Al-Assad had the police fire at the protesters early on in hopes to scare them back into submission, but it only served to outrage the community and grow the rebellion from thousands to hundreds of thousands. As the rebellion grows so does the violence eventually leading up to the current attacks.
Wednesday, Mr. Al-Assad ordered the military to send tanks, armored vehicles, and snipers into Hama in hopes to put down the opposition once and for all. A move that will surely result it many more dead and an even more resolved revolutionary force.
So far this has yet to really cause ripples in the international community and is barely being talked about in the news if at all, but we can expect the situation in Syria to get much worse. Expect updates as the story develops.
